The register was designed on a phone, standing at a piano, with thirty seconds between students. Everything below works on a laptop too — but the shape of it comes from the walk between lessons.
One tap per student
Today’s lessons appear as cards. For each student, the single tap you’ll use most marks them present, and the row collapses with a tick so your thumb always lands on the next name rather than hunting for it.
A whole class that turned up is one tap on All present, which marks everyone not already marked and leaves your existing decisions alone.
An absence in two taps
Tap Absent and pick a reason — illness, holiday, no-show, or other. That’s the whole interaction.
Where your make-up policy says the reason earns a credit, the offer comes to you right there rather than waiting on a list somewhere else: issue the credit, or offer a make-up straight away. See make-up credits explained.
Late marks a student present with a late tag, so the lesson still counts and the pattern is still visible.
Notes, in the right pocket
Tap a student’s row to type a note without leaving the register, then save and move to the next student.
There are two pockets, and nothing ever moves between them by itself:

Closing out the day
When the lessons that needed a decision have one, use Mark day complete. It closes out the day’s remaining scheduled lessons in one go, so nothing is left hanging. Anything you marked by hand keeps the outcome you gave it.
Didn’t finish? Nothing is lost — unmarked lessons wait in the backlog and can be cleared later, from a laptop or from the same phone. See catch up on unmarked lessons.
What a teacher sees, and what happens if the signal drops
A teacher sees only their own lessons on the register. Other teachers’ lessons aren’t hidden behind a message — they’re simply not part of that teacher’s day.
Marking is optimistic: taps register instantly rather than waiting for the network. If a mark can’t be saved, the row says so and reverts. It will never show you a tick that didn’t land.
